Periods after pregnancy is probably not the first thing on your mind! But once you’re holding your sweet little baby in your arms, it’s time for your body to start resuming all of its normal, natural functions — like your menstrual cycle.
When’s it Coming?
Your first period after pregnancy can be influenced by whether or not you’re breastfeeding. If you're not breastfeeding, you'll likely begin menstruating between 6 and 13 weeks after giving birth.
If you are nursing, your period may not occur until after you stop breastfeeding. (But that doesn't mean you can’t get pregnant!)
Your first period after pregnancy probably isn't going to what’s usual for your unique cycle. It may even sneak up on you and be a total surprise (after all, you haven’t had one in such a long time!)
What It’s Like?
Some women experience a slightly heavier, more irregular and possibly more painful period than usual when it does resume.
Let your doctor know if you are soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for two or more consecutive hours, you notice sudden gushes in your flow, pass large blood clots or experience pain beyond your usual pre-pregnancy menstrual cramps.
